Business Network Organizer

A business network organizer solves two of the most common problems small-business owners have. First is their need to get business. Seventy per cent of small business owners say getting enough customers is their #1 challenge. Second is finding time to exchange information with other small-business owners in their community. A network organizer sets up groups of small-business owners to meet regularly, usually weekly, in order to give one another business referrals and to help one another get business. Each group or club has only one person from any particular business or profession, so there's no competition among the members of the group. Such networking organizations are a structured way for professionals and business owners to refer clients and customers to one another.

Also called word-of-mouth marketing, getting business through referrals from other people has always been a common practice. Traditional service and fraternal organizations such as Rotary, Eagles, Elks, Lions, and Moose have long served as indirect and informal ways of obtaining referrals. Many of today's small-business owners, however, are seeking a more focused approach to getting referrals by joining what are referred to as leads clubs or networking groups. The sole purpose of these groups is to enable members to give and get referrals.

That's where the business network organizer steps in. Rather than people joining loose networking groups that often turn into coffee klatches and social gatherings, the networking organizer helps business owners form a more formal group that follows specific procedures to get business from one another and from outside the group. Members pay a fee to the organizer who conducts their meetings, establishes procedures, and ensures that the group is networking smoothly.

There are two ways to become a network organizer: start one or more groups yourself or purchase a franchise from one of the companies already established that teaches you how to run your business. For example, one franchise organization, Business Network Intl., founded in 1985 by Ivan Misner, Ph.D., offers a two-hundred-page manual for network organizers to learn the business along with a solid training program and direct experience.

While some critics believe that networking is a fad, Misner says, "Networking has proven to be as much of a fad as having a sale." In fact, Tom Peters, coauthor of In Search of Excellence and Thriving on Chaos, advises small businesses to devote 75 percent of their marketing time and money to developing a structured word-of-mouth network. Networking is, as it always has been, the most reliable and cost-effective way for a small business to make sure that it has business.
